I came to my knowledge that most apples in supermarkets are waxed with 1-mcp chemical. Is there a relation between eating those apples, which have been preserved for months and cancers?
No. Food grade wax is harmless to the human body, and Apple can produce this wax by itself. We can also add additional food grade wax, depending on the ripeness of the apples after harvest. Waxes can be obtained through natural or artificial synthesis, but they are all organic compounds.
Which crops can 1-MCP be used for?
1-Methylcyclopropene is suitable for environmental protection and fresh treatment:
Fruits: Bananas, apples, pears, apricots, peaches, persimmons, honeydew melons, plums, nectarines, kiwis, cherries, cucurbits, Indian dates, avocados, grapes, mangoes, papaya, passion fruit, strawberries, pineapples, peanuts Pomegranate and so on.
Vegetables: tomatoes, lettuce, celery, cabbage, potatoes, carrots, day lily, onions, toon, soybeans, broad beans, peas, broccoli, asparagus, coriander, cucumbers, spring onions, artichokes, cowpeas, sweet corn, etc.
Flowers:
1) Cut flowers: gypsophila, violet , snapdragon, lily, carnation, delphinium, tulip, dianthus, Blue Sky Hydrangea, Rose, Phalaenopsis, rose, orchid, hibiscus, baorong wood, bellflower, pansy, bell flower, alstroemeria, etc.
2) Potted flowers: modern rose, fairy finger, dragon boat flower, petunia, winter flower begonia, bellflower, hibiscus,miniature rose, geranium, phalaenopsis, etc.
How harmful is 1-MCP to the human body?
1-MCP has low toxicity, LD50>5000mg/kg, according to toxicity classification, it is actually non-toxic substance.

Features of 1-MCP:

Commerical Use
1-MCP has a wide range of applications in the preservation of fruits, vegetables, and flowers.
It is used extensively by growers, packers, and transporters in the agricultural industry to maintain the quality of fruits and vegetables by preventing or delaying the natural ripening process.The use of 1-MCP in agricultural products such as apples, kiwifruit, tomatoes, cherries, mangoes, pineapples, avocados, and melons has been approved and accepted in 34 countries, including the European Union and the United States.
1-Methylcyclopropene inhibits the production of ethylene, delays the decomposition of chlorophyll, alleviates the decline in fruit hardness during storage and shelf life, maintains fruit color and flavor, reduces starch conversion, delays the reduction of soluble solids, and inhibits post-harvest physiological diseases.
1-Methylcyclopropene on Apple
1-Methylcyclopropene has a good fresh-keeping effect on apples of various varieties, can better maintain the fruit quality, and greatly extend the shelf life of the fruit.
The overall performance is that the respiration rate and ethylene release rate of apples decrease, and the decrease rate of hardness, soluble solid content, and acid content slows down.
According to our Research, Average Golden Apples have a shelf life of up to 55 days under normal temperature after 1-MCP treatment.
Red Fuji apples can maintain good quality and flavor within 2 months.
Apples treated with 1-MCP can greatly reduce the occurrence of tiger skin disease, and have an excellent control effect on browning of the fruit core and sticky skin surface.
It can greatly reduce apple storage costs and promote the development of the entire industry.
1-Methylcyclopropene can significantly delay banana fruit softening.
After many tests, bananas were treated with 1-MCP and stored at 20 degrees after 24 hours.
The results showed that: 1-MCP treatment significantly reduced the increase rate of soluble sugar and soluble solid content in banana pulp, and delayed the decrease of fruit hardness.
1-MCP can delay the ripening process of banana fruit, but it will not decrease the eating quality of bananas and its organoleptic properties. Even the addition of exogenous ethylene cannot affect the quality of banana fruits after 1-MCP treatment.
Effect of 1-MCP on the change of soluble solid content in banana pulp.

When stored at 20°C, the soluble solid content in the pulp tends to rise rapidly. In the first 4 days, the difference between the soluble solid content of the control fruit and the 1-MCP-treated fruit was not significant.
Then on the 12th day, the soluble solid content in the control banana pulp was 4.6 times that before storage.
Compared with the control group, the value of the soluble solid treated with 1-MCP was significantly lower.
Effect of 1-MCP on the change of banana fruit hardness.

When stored at 20°C, the firmness of the fruit showed a rapid decline. Before the 4th day, the difference in the firmness of the two groups of fruits was not significant.
After that, the fruit firmness of the control banana decreased faster. When stored for 16 days, the control banana the firmness of the pulp dropped rapidly from 45.9N/cm to 0.98N/cm., a drop of 97.87.
During the same period, the firmness of the 1-MCP-treated fruit was slowly decreasing. The firmness of the fruit was 36.1N/cm when stored for 16 days.
The hardness of the control fruit is 37 times, the difference between the two is extremely obvious.
This shows that the 1-MCP treatment significantly inhibited the decrease in fruit firmness during the late storage period.
